Yeah.  At least all the error messages are gone now.

Here are the parameters in my motion.conf file that control framerate, etc.

How do they compare to what you have?

Hi 
the cams OK, it happens with all I have, and I've run the same version of 
motion 3.2.12
which behaves on the laptop perfectly; OS mint. Even sent my wife out in the 
rain to check, and was
sending frames only when she was out.
the odroid is running 3.2.12+git20140228  and odrobian, cut down Debian, thanks 
for the explanation
of what happens on buffer problem, I'll keep digging
