When Motion starts, in the log it will report the palette types that are 
available as well as the one that was selected.? If there is more than 
one palette type available, you can try a different one via the 
v4l2_palette configuration option.

Another option could also be to upgrade to 4.1.1 via the packages on the 
releases page of the project.? Within the new version, there is an 
additional option to access V4L2 devices via the netcam_url option.? 
This alternative uses ffmpeg to capture images and is basically 
equivalent to using ffplay -f v4l2 /dev/video0 The downside of the 
alternative approach is that there are fewer options that apply.? The 
configuration items of Hue, Brightness, etc are ignored.

Can you provide motion log and also the output of the following commands
(replace /dev/video0 accordingly):

v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --list-formats-ex
v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --all
