Subject: [Motion-user] high resolution pictures

I have been using Motion on Raspberry Pi?s using the Pi camera. I had started
out with the motion-mmalcam version and a feature I really liked was that when
motion was detected it saved both a low res picture (with extension .jpg) and a
high res picture (with extension .JPG). With a picture size of 640x480 and
quality (compression) of 80, the high res pictures would typically be about 1MB
to maybe 1.2MB in size.

When Motion 4.0 and later included native support for the Pi camera, I switched
my camera systems to that version but discovered that it does not save a high
res picture in addition to the low res one. I have tried changing various
settings in the configuration file (such as quality 100, width and height of
1024x768) but that of course results in all of the saved jpg?s being larger in
size. I have a cron job that runs each day to create a tarball of the previous
day?s pictures but now those tarballs get pretty large for copying from a
remote location. With the older version of Motion, the tarball would just have
the low res pictures and if there was something in particular I saw, I could
then transfer the high res version as well as the video file.

Is there a setting in the configuration file that I can set to regain the
saving of those large resolution JPG files?

Thanks.
