Right!  Add a line like this to your motion.conf file:

mask_file /etc/motion/mask.pgm

You can, of course, place the mask file anywhere you want.  But I keep mine
in my "/etc/motion" folder since I'm running motion as root.

If you're running as a normal user, you may want to place it in your user
folder somewhere.
