Do you mean the video codec? This is configurable in your motion config 
file. I think it defaults to mkv but I changed it to mp4 as it seemed to 
work better when viewing files using a browser.

Live stream only supports MJPEG
But you can re-stream and convert motion's stream using thrid party
software, like ffserver

How the functionality was written (which pre-dates me) is that the "make 
movie" (SIGUSR1 or via the http control) triggers the 
termination/finalization of a movie which was already triggered by 
something else and in the process of recording.

As it stands, I do not believe there is any mechanism to start a new 
movie.? I'll add that this is not at all what I initially thought it 
did.? If anything, it should be called "end movie" and there should be 
functionality that allows users to "start movie"...

The default option is to not show the parameters in the webcontrol and 
require an active decision from the user as to what level of security to 
use with them.
