Today's Topics: 1. configuration options for video PLUS stills (Dougie Nisbet) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2018 20:54:10 +0100 From: Dougie Nisbet <dou...@katsura.uk> To: motion-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Motion-user] configuration options for video PLUS stills Message-ID: <c5c9b73e-cb1a-de7d-7468-2c97f31bf...@katsura.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; Format="flowed" The way I use motion has changed a bit this last year. I used to store lots of still images and tweak various options in an attempt to control sensitivity and recording rate. However now I'm recording a lot more video. My setup is mostly Raspberry Pi + cheap logitech USB webcams. The targets are mostly security, plus cats and a bit of wildlife. In order to record the best quality video, I've made the assumption that I need: # Maximum number of frames to be captured per second. # Valid range: 2-100. Default: 100 (almost no limit). framerate 100 but I'd also still like to record some still images. But with a high framerate obviously I'm going to get a high number of stills. So I set the output_pictures option to 'best' and this works quite well. # Output 'normal' pictures when motion is detected (default: on) # Valid values: on, off, first, best, center # When set to 'first', only the first picture of an event is saved. # Picture with most motion of an event is saved when set to 'best'. # Picture with motion nearest center of picture is saved when set to 'center'. # Can be used as preview shot for the corresponding movie. output_pictures best I've assumed that there is no way of having a different recording rate (i.e. a low one) for still images that would still record a few more than 'best', that wouldn't affect the frame rate of the recorded video. Is this correct? Also, in the log files I often come across the message "preview_save: different filename or picture only!" (see below). Do I have something mis-configured somewhere?
