I was able to do 2 of them at 960 x 600 so that's not bad

This is very strange - when putting the width and height parameters
into both camera1.conf and camera2.conf I am able to get back up to
the max resolution on both cameras but when I have the same setting in
motion.conf and not in the camera conf then I get the error with
camera 2

Get some cheap IP cameras from Amazon. I have seven of them connected to 
Motion on my Pi, along with MySQL, Apache, and some custom Java code to tie 
it all together.  I use an external USB drive to store the captured movies 
and images.  Can't capture full motion movies but it's plenty good enough 
for home security.
