In the end I wrote a script that maintains directories at a particular size, deleting the older files as necessary. I had to do a bit of web searching to get the shell snippets I required to do this. Although I would have thought that it's the sort of thing that there would be a linux tool readily available for I wasn't able to find anything that did it automatically and ended up having to script it.
