After using the apt to install Motion onto my Ubuntu 18.04, my first attempt at
running the package got a permission denied failure. Im just starting with the
use of Linux as a security problem has eliminated the use of the more
completely packaged GUI software. Could you give me a pointer or two?

Show us the exact error you are seeing. Copy/paste from the terminal
preferably, including the command you are entering.

Please reply to the list rather than myself personally. I am

I can't copy/paste the error here to help explain, as you have posted
a screenshot rather than copy/paste the text. The error is saying
that it cannot write to the log file in /var/log/motion. The reason is
that you are starting motion as a normal user and users do not have
permission to write to that location. You could create that folder
and make it writable to normal users, or you could change the motion
config file to point to a location in your home directory for the log,
or you could start motion with root permissions. If the install
includes the scripts to run motion as a service (which will have
permission to write to the log file) then you may be able to start it
using
sudo systemctl start motion
and set it to auto-run on boot using
sudo systemctl enable motion
After starting it using systemctl you can look in the log file to
check all is well.
