IR versus Filtered(regular) Cameras - IR seems to suck but I don't know why (Big Wave_Dave) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2021 13:54:37 -0800 From: Big Wave_Dave <dgmu...@gmail.com> To: motion-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Motion-user] IR versus Filtered(regular) Cameras - IR seems to suck but I don't know why Message-ID: <capztunmwihzgt_xpzo7w33ggv-rstss5wapn3i4a1awbnmj...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Hi folks, I'm a new subscriber to this list. I'm getting very inconsistent Motion detection results between camera types and trying to understand why and how to tune them effectively or find devices that will work well in low light conditions. I'm using motion with MotionEye web front-end running on Raspberry Pi4 and a couple Pi-Zero W's). Cameras are as follows: [PCV2] Pi Camera V2 [MMAL] [on Motion 4.2.2] [PNV2] Pi Noir V2 [MMAL} (basically color camera without IR filter) [on Motion 4.2.2] [AFW] Aukey FHD Webcam [V4L USB] Color Camera [on Motion 4.3.2] They are all pointing at the exact same street scene in front of my house and all set to the same resolution: 1024x576. I've set the things to Auto Threshold Tuning via MotionEye but the actual thresholds appear radically different for the same scene. Are there any tweaks to get Auto Tuning to work better? For some reason the auto-tuning algorithm on the AFW cmara sets the threshold to 15000 while the plain PCV2 camera gets 588 and the PiNoir gets ~3500. Seems very odd. Does anybody have any tips for using any of these cameras effectively with Motion on these platforms. Ultimately I'd like to add Infrared lights as none of these cameras are any good in the dark, including the PiNoir as far as I can tell.
