Re: How to download Deb file for 4.3+ (Richard Bown) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Mon, 1 Feb 2021 12:01:18 +0000 From: Richard Bown <rich...@g8jvm.com> To: motion-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Motion-user] How to download Deb file for 4.3+ Message-ID: <e672aa85-6b2f-69dd-43db-7ee5e6c97...@g8jvm.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed One MAJOR CAVEAT _If your system has MYSQL in use DO NOT use this deb_ , It has Mariadb as a dependency. If you load Mariadb on a system using MYSQL, Oracle have added a trap. and the apt data will be corrupted. You will end up having to reinstall the OS. IF you are already using Mariadb, there is no problem. Mariadb was a fork from MYSQL and uses the same file locations. Which caused acrimony between developers of each. If you are using MYSQL on Ubuntu 20, or Linux Mint 20, download the source code ,follow the instructions here:- https://motion-project.github.io/motion_build.html AFTER running "./configure" check the db support boxes are unchecked, ie no support. If the database support is not there proceed with "make" IF you require database support, use the switch when running ./configure to select the one you want to use The git clone at the moment when you run ./configure does not add database support by default. IMO it is a mistake to supply a .deb which has a dependency which can break the OS, I'm not sure if the xenial deb has the same dependency for Mariadb. I ,like many others have found out the hard way as Oracle MYSQL is no longer free, so there is the temptation to use MariaDB. However, the community version of MYSQL is free, it also contains the same trap to screw up the system if MariaDB is loaded. NOTE: many of the Linux OS's are still using old versions of MYSQL, so the answer of "what a load of rubbish mine works fine" is ill advised.
