Hi Richard,

 ? I've seen the same issue, where 8 or more cams running under Motion 
pretty much consumes a quad core machine.? I've noticed the CPU usage 
has gone up with versions newer than 4.0 too, with the same exact camera 
setup.? What is your HW platform (CPU type and speed)?? I recently 
purchased a new laptop to use as my motion machine, trying to throw more 
CPU at the problem.? I haven't got it set up yet though.

I'm using an Hardkernel Odroid N2+
thats running two instances of motion, Homeassitant and owncloud ?as a
NAS , and it seems happy, its muticore and pretty fast

motion use peaks at 280% , but it is multi core?
