Just trying to test out motion.? Can I ask a basic question to start -
Hardware - Pi4 running headless with a Pi v3 camera module? OS - bookworm
I want to use motion to record video on motion detection, record the
whole screen but with a restricted area for the detection (to avoid
swaying trees and traffic in the background)
I then want to view the live picture and the recorded video on my
desktop (running Linux mint)
Is this possible with motion?? I have looked for documentation and found
some stuff but nothing telling me how to define a Pi camera.? Am I
looking in the wrong place?
Thanks
Mick

For Motion you must use a 'helper' application called 'libcamerify' and
run motion as
libcamerify motion
Doing it this way the Pi camera presents itself as a v4l2 device but
without any ability to adjust the camera parameters.? (As far as I've
been able to determine).? Movies can be created and as required copied
via a script (that you'd have to write) into a location (network share?)
that can be accessed via the desktop via a file manager.
If you need to adjust the camera parameters or wish to access the
recorded movies via a web page, you can try Motionplus.? In it, you can
specify the PI camera a different device (libcam_device) and specify
parameters for the camera (libcam_params).? On the web page, it will
also illustrate the recorded movies and allow for download from there.
Either one has the option to remove detection areas via the "mask_file"
option and provide a web page where the live view can be seen.
