Hola, fellow birders: There were two singing male bobolinks on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota (which is in Falcon Heights) today (June 5, at 11:30 a.m.). They're on the farm fields of the campus in an unmowed area. I have inferred bobolink nesting here in earlier years.
How to find them: You should treat this as an urban adventure, since the University campus is a bit like a rabbit warren -- challenging to find your way around. Here's a start: travel on Larpenteur Ave. to either Cleveland or Gortner Aves., turn south and enter the farm fields. Now, you want to keep heading south and then east until you're directly across from the State Fair Grandstand, which you almost can't miss, since it looms largely. You can either drive to it or park along the farm roads and walk to this spot. The bobolinks are in the fields between you and the Grandstand. There is a path alongside the University's composting area, a little bit to the east, where you can walk farther in, toward the south, and maybe get a better view. Val Cunningham St. Paul, Minn.
