Sir;
Would someone please check-out a patch of open water on the NE quadrant of
Lake Phalen in St. Paul.  It is near the walking path.  I am only a very
casual bird noticer.  And there's a strange one there hanging out with the
mallards, geese and coot.  When I look in my rather amateur bird book, the
only thing close is a smew, which seems most unlikely since the book says
it's very rare in the U.S.  So what is it then?
