Saturday's waterbird survey at Lake Winnibigoshish, Cass/Itasca counties, tallied 1158 Common Loons, the highest number there since 1153 on 15 October 1999. Conditions were ideal with light/variable winds. The largest raft of loons was 241 off Birches Public Access. Typical for this time of year was the total of 2113 Bonaparte's Gulls. No unusual species found.
