Some Iowan friends of mine and I took a trip to Sax Zim today. We found a total of 3 Northern Hawk Owls and 8 Great Gray Owls (GGOW). Seven of the GGOWs were found just south and east of the intersection of 7 and 52 later in the day. One of the GGOWs vocalized numerous times while we were watching it.
We drove north on the McDavitt Rd to look for woodpeckers and ran into another group of birders. They had found a male Three-toed Woodpecker (TTWO) and a female Black-backed Woodpecker. Thanks to their directions, we found the male TTWO approximately 2.6 miles north of the Sax Rd on the McDavitt Rd. The bird was in on a snowshoe trail on the west side of the road.
