I found a Surf Scoter at about 12PM today (Saturday) at Prairie Island in Winona. The bird sometimes hung out alone, and sometimes associated with a flock of coots. The bird was several hundred yards downriver of Verchota Landing.
>From Hwy 61: Turn north on Huff St. and continue to follow after it bears left and becomes Riverview Dr. Make a right on Prairie Island Road. After a couple miles, you will come to a sign for McNally landing. From here to Verchota landing is all excellent for ducks. In 2001 a "Scoter Slam" was possible. Dedrick Benz Winona County
