Sharon - the egg is probably a Common Goldeneye, which is a cavity nester. The following was provided by one of our birding experts, Bob Gress: The birds are slightly larger than a wood duck so size seems logical. Bellrose's "Ducks, Geese & Swans of North America describes Common Goldeneye eggs ranging from "dull pale green to olive-green luster."
