2/20/07, 8-10am, The large flock of Pine grosbeaks continue to provide wonderful viewing near the zoo in Duluth. The flock of Bohemian waxwings appeared twice this morning, never really alighting, just zipping around stirring up the grosbeaks. There were also a small group of 10 common redpolls in the area. There were also two mated pairs of cardinals staking out territory. The grosbeaks continue to feast on the ash tree seeds. The land in this area is transected with the western waterfront trail, a railroad track, Grand ave., and the zoo. This setup provides ample opportunity to approach the grosbeaks closely, from a variety of different angles. As aforementioned, the birds are quite tame, and fly down from the trees to within 10ft at times to eat snow and forage on fallen seeds.
