Hello all, I relocated one of the 1st winter (not 1st summer, sorry about that) California Gulls today at the Clay County landfill today and got a fairly decent photograph. I also was able to see the bird in flight. There was no indication of "windows" on the inner primaries, and the top of the rump was barred. Also, I could not discern any color at all in the iris or around the eye. I think these differences rule out 2nd winter Herring Gull.
I'll post this photo to the recently seen page on the MOU website. Good Birding!
