This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 25th, 2006 sponsored by the 
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Several migrants were seen at Park Point today by Jason Caddy, including 
BAY-BREASTED, BLACKPOLL, MOURNING, CANADA, and WILSON’S WARBLERS, BLACK-BILLED 
CUCKOO, and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER.  All of these species were found in 
relatively low numbers last weekend during the Hawk Ridge Birdathon.

Jim Barrett found several shorebirds in Morgan Park on the 23rd near the old 
steel plant, including WILLET, RUDDY TURNSTONE, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.  
Jan Green saw three RED-THROATED LOONS at Brighton Beach in east Duluth on the 
22nd.  Jan also saw the pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS found by Tim Bates over 
the weekend along Highway 23 at Mission Creek in the Fond du Lac neighborhood 
of west Duluth.  Observers are encouraged to report any evidence of breeding, 
since this species has not yet been documented as nesting in St. Louis County.

A male SURF SCOTER was seen today at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.  Jan Wicklund 
saw a flock of ten AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS along Highway 61 just north of 
Silver Bay on the 21st.  

Jeff Newman reported a late GOLDEN EAGLE flyover in east Duluth on the 20th.  
Dave Carmen saw an adult on the 22nd at the West Skyline Hawk Count with a 
radio telemetry unit visible.

John and Susan Kroll found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Itasca County today, along MN 
65 between mile markers 194 and 195.  This is about 18 miles north of Nashwauk.

Recent arrivals in the area include EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE on the 24th, 
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 
RED-EYED VIREO, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, and INDIGO BUNTING on 
the 20th.
