Volunteer Needed ASAP! Laysan Island, Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge
Dates: May 23, 2007 (or earlier) through late Sept-early Oct (exact date not yet set) Location: Laysan Island is a small remote island in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands and is part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Living conditions can be described as "rustic luxury" with each of the 4-person field crew allowed their own Weatherport tent in addition to communal kitchen/office tents perched above a white sand beach. The island is home to 17 species of seabirds, one endangered passerine, one endangered duck, endangered Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. Laysan is a quarantine island: no fresh food is allowed, and all items brought on to the island must meet stringent quarantine protocols. Work: The USFWS conducts island-wide plant and wildlife monitoring programs and restoration activities which include invasive plant control and native plant propagation. The volunteer will have the opportunity to participate in numerous study projects but the main focus will be as follows: May-July-Invasive plant control; Aug-Sept entomology surveys/collections. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should be in good physical condition and be able to live on a small island, living and working with just three other people for the entire four-month tour. Independence, patience, an easy going attitude, and a strong work ethic are important. This is an extremely remote site, communications are limited. Email is available but costly. Transportation from the U.S./Canada, food and clothing will be provided. Inquiries and resumes should be sent to: Mark MacDonald at tokyotrainstyle at yahoo.com or Stefan Kropidlowski at skropidlowski at gmail.com Candidates should respond ASAP - the position is open until filled. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
