Thank you to everyone who has provided me on insight to the behavior of 
mallards.  I guess my first instincts were correct, that the males were ganging 
up on the female and potentially harming her.  I never saw the female reappear 
and now that I think about it I haven't seen any mallards out on the creek 
since then.  Perhaps the males did drown her and that's why they turned on each 
other.
