I was in Grand Rapids for work this week. Last night at about 10PM behind the
Country Inn and Suites on 169, I heard a call from the finger woods, back
toward the Nursing home.
The sound was a cross between a Pheasant, Night Heron and crow.
The Pheasant / Night Heron cross was the "tone" and the crow part was the
length of the call with a slight decending nature at the end. It called a half
dozen times near the hotel, but as I tried to approach it went way behind the
nursing home. I never got closer (I'm guessing now of course) than 100 yards
from it.
Listening to my birding CD's I could not find an owl that fit. Of course my
CD's are not all inclusive either.
Honestly, I've heard it before, but I don't know - or I just don't remember.
