Hello all, If you're in the north country this weekend and would like an early morning Wood Thrush chorus, I heard 4 Wood Thrushes singing this morning in the Paul Bunyan State Forest north of Akeley. From Akeley, take MN64 north until you reach the East Gulch Forest Road and then head west. About a mile or so you will reach a stop sign and this is where I heard the chorus. They began singing about 45 minutes before sunrise, and I stayed and listened for about fifteen minutes. This was the only spot along the Gulch/Halvorsen forest road that I heard Wood Thrushes this morning. I stopped about every 1/2 mile along the road traveling west and picked up 5 singing Hermit Thrushes and several Veery. Ovenbirds were also very vocal this morning.
