Several species of interest have been seen during the past week at Duluth's Park Point. The SNOWY PLOVER, originally found by Shawn Zierman, was relocated today on the lakeside in front of the bathhouse. Twenty-four species of warblers were seen today, most of them seen between the bus turn-around and the recreation area. Also at the recreation area were one or two YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a WESTERN KINGBIRD, and an ORCHARD ORIOLE. Mike Hendrickson relocated the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 30th near the playground at the recreation area. The ARCTIC TERN was seen as recently as the 29th over Lake Superior. It has been found at various locations along the lakeshore, most often from the 31st Street access. Also on the 29th, Matt Mecklenberg found a BLACK SCOTER on the bayside at the entrance to the park. A CALIFORNIA GULL was located by Chris Wood on the 27th on the Minnesota side of the Superior entry, but has not been seen since. Also seen on the 27th at the 12th Street access, was a LITTLE GULL, which also has not been relocated. The COMMON MOORHEN, originally reported by Laura Erickson, was relocated by Mike Hendrickson at Indian Point campground today. The bird was seen in the cattail marsh on the east side of the point. Sparky Stensaas found a SNOWY EGRET and a WHIMBREL at 40th Avenue West in Duluth on the east side embankment on the 28th. Also found at 40th Avenue West on the 25th by Larry and Jan Kraemer was a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD seen on both the south and west side. Janet Riegle spotted a female RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at Erie Pier in Duluth on the 27th. Jan Green found CACKLING GOOSE off of Clyde Avenue in Duluth on the 28th and 29th. Jan also spotted seven AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN flying over Grassy Point on the 28th. Craig and Deb Menze heard YELLOW RAIL calling in the McGregor marsh along Hwy 65 in Aitkin County, starting at the old Soo Line railroad bed north to Hwy 210, and heard rails at every stop sometimes several at a time. Mike Steffes found five BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS today at Oberg Mountain and 21 on Moose Mountain in Cook County. The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, June 7th.
