Midwestern Sandhill Cranes gather in large, premigratory flocks at selected spots throughout the Upper Midwest in the mid-August to November period. The U.S. Fish and Willdife Service is mapping these staging areas to present to the wind power industry as areas to (hopefully) avoid when siting their wind turbines. Information on location, length of stay, and numbers of birds, even if only an estimate, would be valuable. As a minimum, a staging area should have at least 100 birds although smaller ones in SE or WC MN where the range is expanding would also be important to map. Sites in MI, WI, IA, and N IL and IN will be eligible for mapping. Thanks in advance for any input. A good way for your birding wanderings to have some immediate conservation benefits.
