The last week has featured cold rain, with snow briefly in some places, high winds, and clouds. Migration is wrapping up with the sparrows and raptors being the most common migrants seen now. There were two unusual sightings this week, even is they were not of rare species. Larry Wilebski saw an albino RED-TAILED HAWK in Kittson County on October 6. In Beltrami County, Dave Carman had a visit from a partial albino RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD on October 9. >From Otter Tail County on October 10, Joan Burke reported that the RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER has returned to their yard, and there are also some DARK-EYED JUNCOS. Nancy Jackson was in the vicinity of Deer Creek on the weekend where she reported many migrants including SANDHILL CRANE, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S SNIPE, BROWN CREEPER, HERMIT THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, sparrows including CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, and HARRIS'S SPARROW, also WESTERN MEADOWLARK, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD. Shelley Steva and I visited Red Lake County on October 7 where we found a TURKEY VULTURE, OSPREY, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN HARRIER, RED-TAILED HAWK, and AMERICAN KESTREL. In addition there were 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS feeding on the sandbars of the Red Lake River in the town of Red Lake Falls. Elsewhere in that area we saw both kinglets, both nuthatches, an EASTERN BLUEBIRD, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, and PINE SISKINS. In Pennington County, I saw 12 WOOD DUCKS, and two PIED-BILLED GREBES in the river this week, and have FOX SPARROWS, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS among the species in the yard. Kelly Gillund reported seeing an adult BALD EAGLE feasting on road kill along US 59 five miles north of Thief River Falls in Marshall County on October 4. Lyle and Sally Lauber in western Itasca County reported that they saw BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, FOX SPARROW, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on October 10. Dale Yerger , reporting from Cass County, mentioned a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON at Leech Lake, and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SANDERLING, DUNLIN, and a WILSON'S SNIPE. On the water there were a total of about 900 COMMON LOONS at Leech Lake and Lake Winnipegoshish, along with FORSTER'S TERNS, COMMON TERNS, and many BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Also present were many HORNED GREBES, and a RED-NECKED GREBE. Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported more than 1000 SANDHILL CRANES still in the fields north of Lancaster on October 6.
