Clear Lake was almost frozen over, with only a couple of very small open spots, while Loon Lake retained a large patch of open water. There was one Ross' Goose present along with many Cackling Geese, Canada Geese, and Mallards. I did not see any other species besides these. I spent a cold, frustrating half hour waiting for the sleeping Ross' Goose to raise its head when along came a very helpful Bald Eagle. Things woke up in a hurry at this time and I was able to watch the Ross' upright and in flight. I also found a Northern Shrike in the country northeast of Clear Lake. I found a second Ross' Goose at Lake Kohlmeier, which is in Owatonna; Steele County. I checked the town of Ellendale in southern Steele County for Eurasian Collared Dove, which had been reported here by a few people back in July, but did not find them. I did spot a late Common Grackle at a local feeder though. Birding was slow otherwise. Pretty cold wind coming out of the west making birds hunker down to stay warm. Good birding!
