?It?s a miracle,? Erickson said Wednesday evening. ?It?s so thrilling to be
part of such a cosmically important institution. It?s always been my personal
Mecca since I stated birding in 1975. Never in a million years did it occur to
me that I could get a job there.?
The laboratory is highly regarded among birders. It maintains the world?s
largest collection of wildlife sounds, Erickson said, and is a leader in
citizen-participation research projects.
Erickson will write for the laboratory?s Web site, www.birds.cornell.edu , and
for the institution?s ?BirdScope? newsletter to supporters. In addition to
continuing her radio program, Erickson will continue to write her birding blog,
which appears on her Web site, www.lauraerickson..com .
The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology is part of Cornell University.
Erickson and her husband, Russell Erickson, will maintain their residence in
Duluth, and Laura Erickson will commute on a weekly basis to Ithaca for her new
job.
She is the author three books: ?For the Birds, An Uncommon Guide;? ?Sharing the
Wonder of Birds with Kids? and ?101 Ways to Help Birds.?
