After postponement from Saturday to Sunday, the Bemidji CBC was held on December 23, 2007. Despite the blustery weather and slick roads, we had a good count. A Townsend's Solitaire was found by John and Ann Mathisen at the small condominium project at 913 Rako St. in Bemidji. John is a retired wildlife biologist who worked on the Chippewa National Forest and was a key player in the late 1960's Bald Eagle recovery project and both Mathisens have participated on every Bemidji CBC, I believe, since coming to Bemidji. By finding the bird conveniently and shortly before noon and lunch, every participant on the count got to see the Solitaire. This was a new county bird for all of us. Other unusual birds for the count were an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk at the home and feeder of a retired BSU professor, No. Cardinal on Birchmont Dr. in the 3500 block north at the home of a different retired BSU English professor, American Tree Sparrow and two American Coots and two Pied-billed Grebes at the Mississippi River inlet to Lake Bemidji and 291 Common Redpolls (none at feeders). No Evening Grosbeaks were seen again this year.
