March 29, 2008 Led a walk at the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge today. We observed a few birds there, including all three Mergansers, Turkey Vultures and my first Great Egret of the year. After the walk a few of us headed over to Black Dog Lake and birded a couple spots on the West end of the Lake. We observed 19 species of Ducks there and ended the day watching a group of about 50 Tundra Swans fly over us and head North. Additionaly we observed 2 Tree Swallows near the spillway on the West end of West Black Dog Lake. The best waterfowl viewing was from the observation platform, which can be accessed from a parking area along Black Dog road.
Also note that Long Meadow Lake is still in draw down and looks like it could be very good for shorebirds. The best places to view the drawn down area of Long Meadow Lake would be from the Bass Ponds. Craig Mandel EgretCMan at msn.com
