This morning the wind was more of a bother to me than to the birds. Carver
Park was fairly quiet, but the Osprey has returned to the stand as you turn
onto the road leading to the nature center. Both Coopers and Sharp-shinned
Hawks were in the area. Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Meadowlarks, Phoebes, Fox
Sparrow, and Bluebirds have increased in numbers. Still very little ice-free
water in the park. Ring-necked Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Wood Duck, Egrets, and
Great Blue Heron were in the ponds.
The highlight at Carver Parks was not even a bird. There was a River Otter
sliding on the ice from King Blind.
Next stop at the wetlands near the Chevalle neighborhood in Chaska turned up a
single Horned Grebe. Otherwise numbers were up over this past weekend
including more Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Coot, and
a single Canvasback.
Chaska Lake is completely free of ice, but was empty of any ducks save for a
pair of Wood Ducks and Mallard. Around the lake, there was a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, a Brown Creeper and a small mixed flock of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and
Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Other hawks in a few areas, Peregrine Falcon near the intersection of Audobon
Rd and 212 in Chaska, American Kestrel in Carver Park, Turkey Vulture at Chaska
Lake, Osprey at Chaska Lake, and 3 adult Bald Eagles in different locations.
