Today I had the pleasure of seeing a Broad-winged Hawk out in Hyland Lake Park
Reserve in Bloomington, Hennepin County. I first saw it perched on a utility
wire off a gravel road intently looking down then it swooped down into a grassy
ditch and around the corner away from me. It was uniformly dark brown above
and the rectrices were fanned to reveal broad black and white bands. Later
from the Park Reserve while walking the hillsides the BWHA flew overhead being
mobbed by Crows and I was able to see to broad black band on the underside
trailing edge of the remiges, and the tail pattern was even more distinctive
with the sun shining down on it.
