A male Three-toed Woodpecker was a most unexpected surprise this afternoon, May 8, in our back yard on the 1900 block of W Kent Rd in Duluth. For at least a half hour, from 4:30 to 5:00, it was working on two mostly dead spruce trees before flying off and out of sight. What makes this sighting especially unexpected, aside from the time of year, is that this location is in a solidly residential area in the middle of town, with not that many coniferous trees in the yards in this neighborhood.
