This report is being updated to report on results from this weekend's Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory Great Minnesota Birdathon. A tentative total of 175 species were found on Saturday?s St. Louis County Big Day, with additional species seen during other categories of county Big Days, Big Sits, etc. The ?Emberizids? team led by Dave Benson had the highest St. Louis County total with 147 species found on Saturday. In St. Louis County on the 17th a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at Interstate Island in the Duluth harbor; RUDDY DUCKS were at Indian Point and at the Biwabik sewage ponds; SHARP-TAILED GROUSE were seen in the Sax-Zim bog at the Arkola Road (CR 52) and CR 208; YELLOW RAILS were along the Stone Lake Road in the Sax-Zim bog and at the Embarrass rice paddies; a PIPING PLOVER was at Hearding Island; two WHIMBREL were on the Park Point recreational area ball fields; a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was at the Biwabik sewage ponds; a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen along the North Tischer Road; and a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was seen at 62nd Avenue East and Superior Street in Duluth. Two RED KNOTS and a WILLET were also seen at Interstate Island on the 16th. In Lake County on the 17th, six LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors. A SPRUCE GROUSE was seen along CR 2, two miles north of the Sand River. Eight WILSON'S PHALAROPES were at the Castle Danger sewage ponds and another was at the Beaver Bay sewage ponds. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Two Harbors. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen along Slate Drive in Beaver Bay. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen on the 16th at the end of the East Castle Danger Road. The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, May 22nd.
