Having completely misread Joel Claus' message, I headed out to Sibley County
to find the Red-necked and Western Grebes. Instead of going to Sand Lake(or
reading his directions for that matter), I headed out to Mud and Clear Lake.
Those are both southwest of Winthrop or due south of Gibbon. Luckily, there
were 4 Western Grebes on Clear Lake, so the trip was not a waste. On Mud Lake
there were about 5 Pelicans. On my way out to the lakes I stopped at
Assumption Lake in Carver County. There was 1 Red-necked Grebe on the lake
and several Ruddy Ducks along with 2 Yellow-headed Blackbirds in the reeds.
