As fall migration begins, the prairie flowers are at their peak, and all restored prairies are extra beautiful as the big bluestem rises tall among the blazing stars and coneflowers. Families of all sorts of species of birds are gathering in fields and woods to glean much needed nutrition before undertaking the long distance flights. Young birds are trying out their voices with sometimes amusing results, and confusing birders who identify by ear. In Lake of the Woods County, Brad Bolduan reported several flocks of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS along the Faunce Road between the Butterfield Forest Road and Oaks Corner on August 4. In Kittson County on August 5, Shelley Steva and I found a brood of SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, a GREEN HERON, juvenile BLACK TERN, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and EASTERN KINGBIRDS among others. Noteworthy were many easily seen BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS , and several families of GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS at Larry Wilebski's Evergreen Acres. Also common were LE CONTE'S SPARROWS in the meadows surrounding his property. Ten species of shorebirds were seen, but were hard to find as there is little open water in northern Kittson County especially this year. No area held many shorebirds. Several family groups of SANDHILL CRANES were seen. Gary and Cindy Nelson flushed a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along the boardwalk at Big Bog State Park in Beltrami County on August 3. At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, numbers of shorebirds at Parker Pool along CR 7 are increasing as habitat improves. This is the easiest place at the refuge to look at shorebirds at binocular distance, although , of course, a scope would make the ID easier.
