There is no doubt that fall is approaching as the first yellow leaves are starting to be seen, wildflowers tend to the pink and yellow, and the first signs of migration are becoming more insistent. Dark red sunsets are following the dusty work of the combines in the fields, and swallows are all but gone except for the barn swallows. Migrating warblers are starting to appear, and the shorebird migration continues. Larry Wilebski reported RED-TAILED HAWKS, and RED-EYED VIREOS in northern Kittson County. Here in Pennington County, a TENNESSEE WARBLER was heard and seen on August 18 , and increased numbers of YELLOW WARBLERS are present now. Maggie Anderson reported that there have been PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES at the refuge feeders at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County this week. Shorebirds continue to migrate through the refuge. On August 17 there was still a good variety of shorebirds present at Parker Pool along CR 7. Interior pools holding shorebirds included Tamarack, Madsen, Webster, and Mud River. SANDHILL CRANES are starting to congregate at the refuge and in the fields alongside it. On August 21, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flew over headquarters. Donna and Leon Thoreson in Polk County reported EASTERN KINGBIRDS, WESTERN KINGBIRDS, BROWN THRASHER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BOBOLINKS, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and BALTIMORE ORIOLES among others. Shelley Steva found WESTERN KINGBIRDS at both Crookston and Climax on August 15. Scott Kahan reported that shorebirds are migrating through both Becker and Clay Counties now. Yellowlegs and peeps are present at Bisson Lake at the north end of Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County, three miles west of Callaway. 12 GREAT EGRETS were also present at this location.
