Trees are turning yellow in the northwest, and leaves are beginning to fall with the strong winds we have had lately helping that along. The skies are full of migrating geese and other species are massing for the journey south. Swallows and flycatchers have mostly gone, and I saw the last hummingbird in the yard late last week. Robin numbers are increasing, and there are waxwings looking for remaining fruit on the trees. Amy Drake reported that , as of September 20, there were still many AMERICAN COOTS on Lake Christina along MN 78 in Douglas County along with three large flocks of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS. In Wilkin County near Rothsay on September 25, Tammy Mercer observed a GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, a possible SWAINSON'S HAWK, and several species of sparrow. Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County found a ROCK WREN at Inspiration Peak on September 19. Bob O'Connor had several visits from a SPOTTED TOWHEE at his home at 1625 3rd St. S in Moorhead, Clay County on September 24. He has only seen it a couple of times but if you want to look for it, directions are as follows. Take the last exit from I-94 before entering North Dakota, drive north on 8th Ave. The house is a light brown 2-story on the Red River , set back some distance from the street. On September 20, I saw a flock of about 25 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the home of Loren Race, a few miles southeast of Goodridge in Pennington County. Larry Wilebski saw a SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER at his property northwest of Lancaster on September 24.
