Hi Scott,

I have five wood duck houses. Three regularly have squirrels nesting in them.
The other two have baffles that keep the squirrels out as long as I keep the
dogwood pruned below. Squirrels nest in the winter and apparantly clear out
early enough that the wood ducks and mergansers can move. One of my most
regular squirrel boxes was stuffed all the way bottom of the hole with leaves,
but the Woody's nest was successful. Those boxes that are filled by the
squirrels are more prone to predation by raccoons, so I wrap the tree trunks
with aluminum flashing. Another problem is that the squirrels are destructive
tenants. I have purchased a bundle of cedar roofing planks which are easy to
line the box with, but this upkeep is required at least every couple of years
on the boxes with juvenile delinquent squirrels.

I put up a duck house on a tree last fall.I noticed a squirrel putting
nesting materials into the house. Is there anyway to keep squirrels out of the
house?
