Ted Dick sent me all the locations of the Northern Hawk Owls and Great Gray Owls seen on the Baudette CBC. Minnesota now has 47 reported Northern Hawk Owl sightings and the hot spot to see numerous Hawk Owls has to be Lake of the Woods County where its possible to find nearly 20 Northern Hawk Owls! Sax Zim Bog area has 5 Northern Hawk Owls. 1. CR 7 and CR 28 2. Admiral Rd (1/2 mile north of Cranberry Ln) 3. McDavitt Rd ( seen on the logging rd in the open logging area off McDavitt Rd ) 4. CR 7 and CR 310 (Keenan Dr) and 5. Melrude Rd just SW of the Berg Lake Rd. In Duluth I have not heard of any recent reports of the Hawk Owl near the Duluth Airport off Airport Blvd or Airport Rd. It was also seen sometime ago on Rice Lake Rd (CR 4) near the entrance of the landfill. Along Scenic 61 at Larsmont which is 3 miles east of Knife River was relocated by Jim Lind along Hwy 61 expressway at the intersection of Salakka Rd on 1/2/09 then it flew inland and out of sight.
Great Gray Owls are now up to 36 sightings. In Sax Zim Bog there are a few good places to look for them. 1. Nichols Lake Rd (CR 232) 2. McDavitt Rd where there are now a pair seen hunting together. Look 4-5 miles north of CR 28 to the first house to the west after leaving the bog habitat. 3. CR 47 5 miles south of CR 133. This owl was seen twice in one day on 1/1/09 and the owl has been seen numerous times by the local school bus driver 4. Along CR 7 between CR 28 (Sax Rd) and Byrnes Greenhouse on the east side and 5. CR 83 at the intersection of Townline Rd was seen recently again by Jason Mandich. Only new Snowy Owl report is that there is a new Snowy Owl at the Mpls Airport along Tunnel Drive and Cargo Rd. Minnesota has 50 Snowy Owl reported since Sept 1 2008.
