The last CBC's were conducted last weekend under very cold conditions, but a lot of good birds were seen as reported in the last report. Since then the weather has not really moderated, but the winds have been light, so it has been somewhat pleasant in the northwest. This year we are so far without the coating of ice that has plagued us for the last few winters. Lots of species are showing up at feeders as more and more of the natural food gets buried in the snow. Larry Wilebski in Kittson County saw a SNOWY OWL five miles west of Lancaster on CR 6 on January 4. Larry also has several HOARY REDPOLLS coming to his feeders at his cabin northwest of Lancaster. Lance Crandall at Lake Bronson SP reported that HOUSE FINCHES have found the park feeders. Here in Pennington County, PURPLE FINCHES showed up again at our feeder on January 7. A single DARK-EYED JUNCO continues to frequent the ground under the feeder. Rick Julian in Otter Tail County reported three MOURNING DOVES in his yard. PILEATED WOODPECKER, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, and DOWNY WOODPECKER at the feeder, and a RING-NECKED PHEASANT was seen at Lake Ida. Roland Jordahl in Pelican Rapids reported a BARRED OWL,and at his feeders , BROWN CREEPER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, NORTHERN CARDINAL, COMMON REDPOLL, and PINE SISKINS. TRUMPETER SWANS are being seen in the Pelican River. Deb Johnson in Alexandria, Douglas County has had lots of birds in her yard including COOPER'S HAWK, PILEATED WOODPECKER, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, NORTHERN CARDINAL, PURPLE FINCH, RED CROSSBILLS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS.
