I updated the owl maps on my blog: http://colderbythelakebirding.blogspot.com/
Great Gray Owl reported sightings are up to 48 sightings Northern Hawk Owl reported sightings are up to 52 sightings Snowy Owl reported sightings are up to 54 sightings Great Gray Owls: - Best spot to look for these owls is in the Sax Zim Bog area. The best road is McDavitt Rd from 2.0 - 4.0 miles north of the Sax Rd (CR 28) -Nichols Lake Rd ( CR 232) is another good road to locate these owls. - CR 7 near the Byrne's Greenhouse and also CR 7 1 - 2 miles north of CR 133. Northern Hawk Owls - Sax Zim Bog has several good spots to look for these owls: 1. Sax Rd and CR 7 intersection 2. McDavitt Rd 3. Admiral Rd 4. Owl Avenue 1 mile south of CR 52 (Arkola Rd) Duluth Hawk Owls - Airport Road and Rice Lake Rd intersection is the best spot. - Jean Duluth Rd and the Beyer Road is fair spot to look for this owl. Snowy Owls: - Best spot is to drive to the end of Minnesota Point (Park Pt.) and scan over towards Wisconsin. Check on top of the ice for these roosting owls. Snowy Owls like to roost near large chunks of ice, near ice ridges and other large objects frozen in. - The Snowy Owl on Airport Approach Rd at the Airport and Correction Facility is always been a good spot to look for these owls but security officials at the prison do not care for people parking cars on shoulder to view these owls. You cannot park on the shoulder of this road. The best idea is to drive over to FedX and park in their parking lot and scan from there or possibly walk along the shoulder of the road to view the owl. Best times are early am hours and pm hours. Sometimes Snowy Owls will perch on telephone poles closer to Hwy 53 and Gordy's Farm Market.
