This morning a flock of around 15-20 white-winged crossbills were seen in the evergreens at Carpenter Nature Center on St. Croix Trail. The trees are located close to the administration and visitors' center, between those buildings and the orchard. The flock was relatively quiet in the spruces, and went unnoticed until it rose up and moved in a southerly direction. The birds appeared to be circling around to the back side of the trees, and we didn't see them fly beyond the stand. However, when we checked the opposite side, we were unable to find them again. Also at Carpenter, on the trail leading to the north pine plantation, we found 2 or 3 brown creepers. Jen Vieth reported that a redpoll had been at the feeders, though we did not find it. Elsewhere, at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, there was a N. shrike in the west end of the grounds.
