Somewhat unconsciously, much of my birding is within 10 miles of the 169
corridor, from Aitkin CR 18 south to Elk River. This area includes portions
of Aitkin County, Mille Lacs Lake, Kathio State Park and Sherburne Refuge.
Decided to put together a list of what I've seen along 169 in the last five
years (moved here from Wisconsin 12/03), was intrigued to tabulate 279
species.
The list includes:
* Greater White-fronted, Snow & Ross' Geese
* Eurasian Wigeon
* Harlequin Duck
* Spruce & Sharp-tailed Grouse (Spruce was seen in 2004 along CR 18, near CR
5 intersection, aware that their presence in Aitkin County is disputed)
* Red-throated & Pacific Loons
* Little Blue Heron
* Cattle Egret
* Glossy Ibis (this may stretch the 10 mile limitatation a bit - Aitkin bird
from a few years back)
* Swainson's Hawk
* Gyrfalcon (Aitkin bird a while back)
* Wilson's Plover (documentation not accepted)
* Marbled Godwit flocks
* Buff-breasted Sandpiper
* Little Gull
* Lesser Black-backed Gull
* Least Tern
* Northern Hawk, Great Gray, Boreal Owl
* Long-eared & Short-eared Owl
* Acadian Flycatcher, Western Kingbird
* Loggerhead Shrike
* Black-billed Magpie
* Boreal Chickadee
* Townsend's Solitaire
* 29 warblers
* Summer Tanager
* LeConte's Sparrow
* Both Crossbills and Grosbeaks
Never guessed this area would have such excellent birding!
Good birdinng to all.
