Guiding the Gregory's of Iowa today. Highlights:
- 6 Hoary Redpolls! (2) at the Admiral Rd feeder (1) Arkola Rd Suet Feeder (1) Owl Avenue Feeder (2) Blue Spruce Rd Feeder * All of them were the classic male Hoary Redpolls ( Have good photos of only one of the Hoary Redpolls ) and there was a female Hoary Redpoll at the Blue Spruce Rd feeder with a male Hoary Redpoll. - 3 Northern Hawk Owls in the Sax Zim Bog ( no new locations ) - Barrow's Goldeneye in Duluth off 21st Ave East ( Thanks Peder ) Side note: Great Gray Owls are becoming more difficult to locate in the past 3 weeks in the Sax Zim Bog area. A lot of birders are searching for them in the Sax Zim Bog areas but its getting mighty tough to locate one these days. Northern Hawk Owls are staying put and in fact some new ones have been popping up in Duluth, Lake County and along the northshore. I have not enter them on my map yet but its interesting that these owls still keeping moving around. I broke down the feeders in Sax Zim Bog into two main areas: the north side and the south side. On the north you have Admiral Rd feeders, Arkola Rd feeder and the Owl Avenue feeder and these feeders except Owl Ave. have Boreal Chickadees coming to them and Arkola Rd feeder is attracting at least 5 Boreal Chickadees to the deer suet. Also the north side feeders have the highest concentration of Pine Grosbeaks vs. the south feeders. The south feeders are residential feeding stations and they are Morse family feeders on Blue Spruce Rd, Abramson's feeders on Little Whiteface Rd and Paul Mueller's feeders just north of Meadowlands. All the south feeders have good concentration of redpolls and other winter residents. All the feeders have Hoary Redpolls coming them! The Abramson's feeders and the Morse feeders are the only feeders that have Evening Grosbeaks coming to them in the Sax Zim Bog area. The foot paths on the McDavitt Rd for the Am. Three-toed Woodpeckers and the Black-backed Woodpeckers are nicely packed down and easy to walk on. No need to wear boots on these paths as I wore sandals on them the other day! Also the logging that is taking place on McDavitt Rd is interesting as the logging is not done by a contract logging outfit but it looks as though the public who have permits are logging only trees they can manage to haul out on thier own pick up trucks. That is better than wiping out a lot trees as larger logging outfits usually do. It will not be long till the ground thaws out and the logging stops. The Sax-Zim Bog Winter Bird festival is no longer taking registrations as we have 155 birders registered for the event! We topped last years totals by 35 birders!!
