Along the river path, just south of the wig-wam frame that someone has
constructed, there was a small flock of redpolls sunning in the top of
a spruce. I say "sunning" because there was no feeding activity in
evidence, just a vocalizing soft enough that it might have been
missed, had I not stopped to examine a nest structure I'd never
noticed before. Luckily the wind paused long enough for the sound to
be detected then, and followed to the source. Unfortunately, the birds
were pretty well-concealed and apparently not very mobile; all I got
to see was a flash of white when at least 4 of them took off across
the river toward the tip of Pike Island
