At around 4 PM today, there was a flock of ww crossbills feeding from cones on the ground, beneath some spruce boughs that hung all the way to the surface. It's not clear whether they had plucked the cones or simply found them wind-fallen. We parked right beside the trees before we could see exactly what was under them, but they seemed undisturbed by us. A few of them flew up into the lower mid-canopy very briefly, giving us unhindered, close looks. There was relatively little vocalization going on as they fed, and they finally took flight farther into the cemetery, in a NW direction--- a lovely addition to a day that had included siskins and redpolls at Carpenter Nature Center in Hastings.
